Bellerive Poultry

Beatrice Croad

Alice is checking out Beatrice's bandage

Beatrice came out of the egg with a deformed left foot. The outside toe was just cartilage and was fused to the next toe which was bent almost in two, progressively worsening as the toes grew. Because she has lovely feathered legs and her mother was looking as if she might die, we decided to have the toes separated. Our wonderful vet cut the toes apart and cut the webbing under the deformed toe. It healed beautifully with no infection or problems. None of the other chickens pecked at it, and Beatrice did not limp once. It will never be straight, but it is now free and she can walk and run with the best of them. I believe that the problem came from varying temperatures in the incubator and is not genetic.

Since writing the previous page, Beatrice has started laying and is the first of her hatch to do so.
